The Secret Life Of The Elephant Man

The Secret Life Of The Elephant Man

Deformed at birth, shunned by humanity, devout Christian Joseph Merrick seems doomed to die in Leicester Workhouse. Yet by shedding his faith and embarking on life as a professional freak, Joseph builds a successful career as The Elephant Man. Alice Powell, a once beautiful young woman hounded by normal society, joins the sideshow as The Bearded Lady. As Joseph and Alice find solace in performance and each other, they are driven apart and into the circle of unhinged surgeon Dr Gilbert Greystone.

Greystone devises a masterplan to sell Eugenics to the masses and legalise the sterilisation of those classified as defective. Can Joseph and Alice save themselves from the scalpel, or will Victorian Britain embrace the scientific solution to world supremacy at a nightmare human cost?

The Secret Life of The Elephant Man is a work of fiction inspired by Joseph Merrick, exploring the major themes of beauty and deformity, social class and religious faith at a defining  moment in national history.
